No Halloween is complete without at least one pumpkin carved. Jack-o'-lanterns are a fun craft to make that allows you to get your hands dirty while getting into the spooky spirit of the season. Whether you plan on decorating your porch with your creation or leaving it inside to be admired, pumpkin carving is one Halloween tradition that shouldn't be missed out on. It's also an excellent opportunity to gather pumpkin seeds to make a healthy snack!

We're all familiar with the triangular noses and toothy greens of the average jack-o'-lanterns. This year, we want to mix it with some new creative and fun designs that you will love. We have designs for every Halloween scene - whether you're going for spooky, cute, or even glamorous Halloween decor. But to really set the scene, we recommend hiding an iTouch wireless speaker nearby to play spooky sounds or Halloween hits!

And don't worry - you don't have to be an expert carver to cut out these carvings. Here's a list of unique pumpkin carving ideas!

A Wicked Pumpkin

This is a simple way to upgrade a typical jack o' lantern design. The unique and witchy theme will have trick-or-treaters and guests cackling with delight!

  • Medium or large pumpkin
  • A carving knife or other sharp knife
  • Green paint
  • Paint brush
  • Small witch's hat
  • Glue
  • Fake tea light (optional)

How to:  Carve an opening out of the top of your pumpkin and scoop out the seeds. Save the top. Carve a face, preferably a smiling one that imitates cackling. After you've finished carving out a face on your pumpkin, use the green paint to make the face green. Wait for it to dry.

Meanwhile, put the small witch's hat on top of the pumpkin stem. Glue it down to secure it in place. Wait for it to dry.

When everything is finished drying, turn on your fake tea candle and put it inside the pumpkin if you are using one. Top your carved pumpkin with the witch's hat stem piece.

A Brainy Carving

If you're a fan of the gory and gross side of Halloween, this jack o' lantern is a great balance between horror and cuteness that won't scare the neighbors.

What you'll need:

  • Medium or large pumpkin
  • A carving knife or other sharp knife
  • Prop brain from a party store
  • Glue

How to: Carve an opening that is smaller than your prop brain on the of the top of your pumpkin and scoop out the seeds. Save the seeds and goop, and discard the top piece. Carve out a face, possibly one that looks scared.

Put the prop brain into the hole on top so that it fits snuggly with some of it peeking out. If the hole is too small, carve away slivers from the hole until it fits snug and tight. Use glue to secure if it you wish.

Use the leftover pumpkin guts to decorate the area around the brain. The goal is to hide the edges of the hole and make it look like gross guts are splattering out.

Pretty and Glittery

Glitter is a welcome decor style all year round! Take your standard glitter painted pumpkin, and combine it with a carving!

What you'll need:

  • Medium or smaller sized pumpkin
  • A carving knife or other sharp knife
  • Liquid glue
  • Paint brush
  • Loose glitter

How to: Carve an opening out of the top of your pumpkin and scoop out the seeds. Save the top. Carve a face, or shapes like stars or a spider - feel free to get creative with the design!

Pour the glitter into a bowl, on a plate, or on top of laid out newspapers - anything that can help prevent a big mess. Paint your carved pumpkin with a thin layer of glue.

While the glue is still wet, roll your pumpkin around in the glitter. Allow it to dry before displaying it.

Stencils are your friend

Don't have the steadiest hands? You may want to consider using stencils for carving. Even great artists can find it difficult to draw even lines and neat designs on the side of a bumpy and round pumpkin. Stencils work well as a guide for drawing out designs on a pumpkin. Whether you're working on a simple face, or on something more intricate like a Frankenstein face, you can easily find a stencil online! Just print and cut out the shapes. If you are good at drawing, you can draw your own stencils as well!
